Keynote Speaker Biography

Steve Braun, a notable public servant, currently holds the position of District 4 Secretary with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). His journey with FDOT began in 1994 as a Professional Engineer Trainee. Steve is originally from South Africa and is a graduate of Clemson University and a registered Professional Engineer. Beyond his academic achievements, Steve is a Certified Public Manager, and enriched his leadership skills through the FDOT Leadership Academy, the Florida Engineering Leadership Institute (FELI), and the AASHTO Executive Leadership Institute.

Steve’s career includes a tapestry of roles, each marked by his dedication and positive impact. Embarking in Roadway Design, he laid the foundation for his intricate understanding of transportation systems. His transition to the Planning and Environmental Office saw him spearheading pivotal PD&E studies, most notably the Indian Street Bridge Environmental Impact Statement and the I-595 Express Lanes PD&E Study.

Steve’s ascendancy through FDOT’s ranks underscores his versatility, relationship building, and expertise. Holding two key department head positions – the Planning and Environmental Management Administrator, and later, the District Design Engineer – Steve exhibited exceptional leadership, shaping strategies that fueled transportation development. This journey led him to his role as the Director of Transportation Development.

With his recent appointment as District Secretary, Steve is now at the helm of a team of 625 dedicated FDOT employees responsible for the execution of an impressive $6 billion transportation work program across Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties. This multifaceted program underpins FDOT’s comprehensive approach, encompassing planning, programming, development, design, operations, and maintenance of multi-modal transportation projects.

In summary, Steve Braun’s journey from a Professional Engineer Trainee to District 4 Secretary stands as a testament to his commitment, leadership, and impact on transportation and the communities it serves.
